Riga Cathedral Girls’ Choir next to the most professional and best amateur choir of Latvia is one of the most vivid and active musical groups in Latvia. Since the foundation of Riga Cathedral Choir School (1994), when there were only few girls studying, the Choir has grown and changed a lot. Currently the Choir gathers 85 singers from age 9 to 19. Choir was founded in 1997, firstly performing in the Services of Riga Dom.

From 1997 till 2000 the conductor of the Choir was Gunta Birziņa, since 2000 it has been leaded by Aira Birziņa. The repertory of the Girls’ Choir is very wide, including Latvian folk songs and original songs, sacred and secular classics, romantic and contemporary music. One of the main tasks of the Choir is a creative collaboration with composers – it has premiered opuses of Uģis Prauliņš, Juris Kulakovs, Raimonds Pauls, Mārtiņš Brauns, Renāte Stivriņa, Valdis Zilveris, Rihards Dubra, Juris Vaivods, Vitauts Miškinis and others.

Choir has performed and participated in the festivals in Latvia, Estonia, Sweden, Germany, Great Britain, Lithuania, Spain, Hungary, Italy and others. It has won several prizes in international competitions – it is the 1st prize winner of the EBU and BBC radio 3 contest „Let the Peoples Sing” (Great Britain, 2003), 1st prize winner of the International Choir Contest „Cantemus” (Hungary, 2004), Grand Prix and 1st prize winner of the children’s choir contest, special prize for the Basque song and special prize from the audience of the 41st Tolosa choir contest (Spain, 2009), 1st place in the Children’s choir category of XII International Choir contest „Tallinn 2011” (Estonia).

Choir has participated in the Song and Dance Celebration „Rīgai – 800”, XXIII and XXIV Nationwide Latvian Song Celebrations, IX and X Latvian Youth Song and Dance Celebrations. The choir has had a successful and creative collaboration with foreign guest conductors. It has participated in the staging of children’s opera „The Little Sweep” by Benjamin Britten in Sigulda Opera music festival, Maurice Ravel’s children’s opera „ L'enfant et les sortilèges in Latvian National Opera, Musical of Andrew Lloyd Webber “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” in Dailes theatre.

Concerts „Gribas drusku pablēņoties” („This time joking around in allowed”) has been issued in DVD (2007) and CD (2008, nominated for the Latvian Music Awards in the category „Musical album for children”). Girls’ voices have been recorded in CDs „Kas kaitēja nedzīvot’i” (2004) and Rihards Dubra „Te Deum” (2006), under the guidance of the conductor Māris Sirmais, as well as sever records in the Archive of Latvian Radio.
